Agenda 2010

PARA-SITE

Para : A prefix, from Greek, with the meanings “at or to one side of, beside, side by side, near, from, against, contrary to”
Site : The place where anything is fixed; situation; local position.

Brief : In small teams, you are asked to design and make a Para-Site that connects to and symbiotically enriches the dormitory building at Hooke Park. This building – the sleeping accommodation for the SummerMake participants – was designed by Edward Cullinan Architects and completed in 1999.
The Para-Sites could take one of many forms, as: Extensions; Terraces; Cocoons; Belvederes; Snugs; Kivas; Labyrinths; Nests; Towers; Treehouses. They will be spatial experiments that react with or against the rich opportunities presented by the existing buildings (its ladders, balconies, stable-doors, undercrofts, green roof and surrounding landscape and trees).
Participants will be working in wood and other found materials from the forest and it surroundings. You should aim to maximise re-use and recycling, to build semi-permanent additions to the existing structure.
